What Is the Difference Between Plasma Cutting and Laser Cutting ?

Mar 18, 2020

The main difference between laser cutting and plasma cutting is the difference between cutting thickness, and of course, the difference in cutting operational cost. The advantage of plasma cutting is that it can cut thick plates, and the price is low, but the cutting price surface is rough. Laser cutting surface is smooth, cutting accuracy is high, the price is more expensive than plasma cutting. The disadvantage of plasma cutting is that the cutting gap is large, about 3mm. The most important part of plasma is the power supply. In fact, the power consumption of plasma is very large corresponding to the laser of the laser cutting machine.

Plasma cutting machine is a kind of thermal cutting equipment, the main working principle is compressed air as the main body, high-temperature, and high-speed plasma arc as the heat source, local melting of the metal to be cut, and at the same time using high-speed airflow to blow away the molten metal, forming a narrow cutting seam. Plasma cutting machine can cut stainless steel, iron, aluminum, copper, and other metal materials, and the cutting speed is fast, the cutting seam is narrow, the incision is flat. The plasma cutting machine is generally used in the construction, installation, and maintenance of mechanical and metal structures.

Laser cutting machine uses high-power and high-density laser beam to scan the surface of materials. In a very short time, it can heat the materials to thousands or even tens of thousands of degrees Celsius, which can make the materials melt or vaporize, and then use high-pressure gas to blow the melting or other materials away from the cutting seam. Laser cutting uses an invisible beam instead of a traditional mechanical knife. Laser cutting speed is fast and the incision is smooth. Generally, it does not need post-processing. The effect of cutting heat is small and the deformation of the plate is small.

For the difference of cutting accuracy, the cutting accuracy of plasma can be within 1mm, while that of laser cutting can be within 0.22mm. In terms of cost, the plasma cutting machine is cheaper than laser cutting machine. In terms of machining accuracy, plasma cutting is equivalent to rough machining and laser cutting is equivalent to fine machining.
