Laser Application in PCB / FPC Manufacturing

PCB and flexible circuit board can be said to be a blood transfusion pipeline of electronic products. The flexible circuit board (FPC) has the advantages of high density, lightweight, bendable and three-dimensional assembly. It is suitable for the market development trend and has a growing demand. With the rapid development of the industry, the processing technology of the flexible circuit board is also constantly innovating.

In the electronic industry, most of the manufacturing processes are inseparable from the application of laser processing. The production efficiency and precision processing characteristics of advanced laser processing technology determine the importance of its position in electronic manufacturing. Laser marking, laser welding, laser cutting, laser drilling, laser etching, LDS laser direct molding are widely used in electronic manufacturing. The large-scale application of laser processing technology will bring huge economic benefits to laser equipment providers.

1. PCB vs flexible circuit board

As an important electronic connector, PCB is used in almost all electronic products, known as the "mother of electronic system products". As long as there are integrated circuits and other electronic components, printed boards are needed for electrical interconnection. PCB develops from a single side to double side, multi-layer and flexible, and it is developing towards high precision, high density, and high reliability, and constantly reduces volume, reduces cost, and improves performance, which makes PCB maintain strong vitality in the development process of electronic equipment.

Compared with the hard PCB, the soft PCB is composed of the soft copper foil substrate and the soft insulating layer, which are pasted with adhesive and then pressed together. 2. Application of laser in PCB and FPC manufacturing

In the future, the smaller and more complex flexible circuit board will become the future development direction. The traditional processing method is difficult to meet the processing needs. In order to achieve a more refined flexible circuit design, more refined processing solutions are needed.

(1) Laser marking

Laser marking is one of the biggest application fields of laser processing. The principle of laser marking is to use the high-energy-density laser to irradiate the material locally, to make the surface material vaporize or have chemical reaction of color change, so as to leave a permanent mark. Because most of the materials have good absorption of UV light, it can be used to mark the surface of most of the materials precisely, and can print various patterns, characters, and symbols. Non-contact processing, no consumables, environmental protection, no pollution, fully in line with the existing PCB and flexible circuit board industry high-quality marking requirements. It can make up for the lack of silk screen processing, and gradually become the best processing tool for PCB marking, playing a pivotal role in the circuit board industry! At the same time, the contrast of the marking effect is high and easy to identify.

UV laser marking machine, with a high-energy laser beam, can change the light energy into chemical energy when it acts on polymer materials such as pi. Under the action of a precision laser beam, the chemical bond of some connecting material atoms and molecules changes, so as to achieve the purpose of surface treatment. In the process of processing, due to the processing time and energy concentration, it will hardly damage the surface of processed objects. Cutting PCB hardboard

The application of UV laser in PCB production also includes cutting thick PCB board. PCB board is composed of glass fiber-based polymers such as FR4. Laser cutting is required from dividing plate to curve cutting. The sample below is a 10 mm2 square cut from a 0.445 mm thick hard plate using a 15 W laser. The pulse width and multiple repetition frequencies of the laser can control the thermal effect of the material and reduce the generation of carbide residues, thus balancing the contradiction between output and quality. The sample below is processed at an average speed of 7.5 mm / sec.

Cutting the covering film of the flexible circuit board

The covering film is used to protect the fragile conductor. It forms an insulating area between multilayer circuit board assembly elements, which is used for environmental insulation and electrical insulation. The covering film is composed of a layer of polyimide 12.5 to 25 microns thick which is adhered to the peel paper by adhesive. The covering film needs to be cut according to the specific shape, and at the same time, the peeling paper should not be damaged. In this way, the formed covering film can be easily removed from the stripping paper. The sample shown in the figure below comes from a 12 W laser, which cuts a 25-micron thick polyimide film with high quality at an average speed of 400 mm/sec. If a 15 W laser is used, a cutting speed of 500 mm/sec or higher may also be achieved.

3. Advantages of green light / UV PCB laser cutting machine in PCB circuit board processing

(1) Compared with CO2 laser, it can be applied to a wider range of materials. Except for aluminum substrate, almost all material products can be processed. In addition, the wavelength of ultraviolet and green light is shorter, the pulse width is small, the thermal effect is small, and there is no burning phenomenon.

(2) Non-contact machining can be used for any graphics processing without any influence, so in the PCB industry, compared with the traditional processing method, it does not need any adjustment, can effectively improve the response speed, for any curve processing.

(3) The processing effect is good, the laser wavelength is short, the thermal effect is small, the cutting edge is smooth, it will not produce any stress on the PCB circuit board, and it will not make the board deform.

(4) High cutting accuracy, camera positioning, cutting gap less than 50 microns, high cutting position accuracy.

(5) The operation process is simple, the software is automatically controlled, the automatic loading and unloading mechanism can be connected, and the labor cost can be saved.
