How to Choose Auxiliary Gas When Laser Cutting Galvanized Sheet?

Galvanized steel plate is a kind of plate that can protect the carbon steel inside by galvanizing the surface and is not easy to rust after long-term use. Although this kind of plate is a little more expensive than the ordinary carbon steel plate, it is still cost-effective in terms of the cost of the whole product because there is no need to spray for rust prevention and other subsequent processes.

From the perspective of auxiliary gas, there are generally three cutting processes for galvanized steel plate, namely air cutting, oxygen cutting, and nitrogen cutting.

1. Air cutting

The advantage is that the processing cost is very low, only need to consider the power cost of laser and air compressor, no need to generate an auxiliary gas cost, but the cutting efficiency on the thin plate can match the nitrogen cutting, which is an economic and efficient cutting method.

However, the disadvantages in the cutting section are also obvious. First of all, the cross-section cut by air will produce burr on the bottom. After laser processing, the products must go through secondary processing such as deburring, which is not conducive to the whole production cycle. Secondly, the section cut by air is easy to blacken, which affects the quality of products. Therefore, the advantages of laser processing without subsequent processing can not be reflected. Therefore, in the processing of galvanized steel plates, many enterprises are reluctant to choose air cutting method.

2. Oxygen cutting

This is the most traditional and standard cutting method. The advantage is that the gas cost is low, and in the sheet metal processing based on carbon steel, there is no need to switch auxiliary gas frequently, which is convenient for factory management.

But the disadvantage is that after oxygen cutting, there will be a layer of an oxide skin on the surface of the cutting section. In addition to the black edge, if the product with oxide skin is directly welded, the oxide skin will peel off naturally after a long time. This is one of the reasons why the galvanized sheet is prone to faulty welding.

3. Nitrogen cutting

Nitrogen is used for high-speed processing, which is different from the oxygen used for combustion support. Nitrogen plays a protective role, so no oxide skin will be produced on the cutting section. Many manufacturers also take this advantage, so the cutting of galvanized steel plates often uses nitrogen for processing.

But the disadvantage of nitrogen cutting is also here: because there is no protection on the cutting section, the product is easy to rust. It is recommended that the material be repainted by the manufacturer.
